Welcome to my professional website. My name is Axel Alonso Valle, and I am a freelance English to Spanish translator and proofreader of Spanish texts who has been working actively in the book publishing industry since 2006. It was then, after finishing my Physics degree at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, when my passion for literature and mastery of English persuaded me to change the direction of my life and try to make a living as a translator. With that purpose in mind, at the same time that I got my first commissions, I decided to take a postgraduate course in English>Spanish translation in Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) to improve my working skills. Subsequently, and with the same drive for continuous education, I signed up for different courses at the renowned Spanish academy for professionals of the publishing industry Cálamo & Cran which qualify me to use CAT (Computer-Assisted Translation) tools like SDL Trados Studio and also carry out proofreading tasks in Spanish texts, a skill that helped me moreover to refine my writing and improve my attention to detail as a translator.
In recent years, I have worked mainly for the prestigious Spanish publishing house Akal translating classic and crime novels; essays on History, Anthropology and Archaeology; landscaping and architecture guides; photography manuals, and so on. Authors whose works I’ve translated include such illustrious names as Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland, Silvie and Bruno) or J. M. Barrie (Peter Pan) and crime and hard-boiled cult writers such as Chester Himes, Horace McCoy and Agatha Christie.
Besides my work as a literary translator, my university degree allows me likewise to translate and proofread papers, articles and other texts in the fields of Physics, Optics, Mathematics and Astronomy —these being the scientific disciplines I specialize in—, and also of general and popular science.
Lastly, let me invite you to visit the rest of the pages of my website, where you will find a comprehensive list of my publications to date, the professional services I offer and a blog (in Spanish only) that I will update regularly with articles dealing mostly with literature and translation.
